Urban Ventures is a faith-based, nonprofit organization with the mission to educate children, strengthen their families, and build a healthy community. We partner with families in some the most under-resourced neighborhoods of south Minneapolis with one overarching goal–to send every youth to college or some form of post-secondary education. Working Hours
36 hours per week: Regular working hours Monday through Friday with flexibility to meet programming needs

Primary Responsibility
The VP of Advancement will have overall responsibility for Urban Ventures’ fundraising and revenue strategies. This includes casting the vision for strategic planning and orchestrating the implementation of all programs to secure financial support and reach targeted budget goals. Reporting to the CEO, the VP of Advancement will be a member of the executive leadership team that drives organizational strategy. This role will lead the planning and execution for cultivating and soliciting gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, churches and others. The VP of Advancement will also lead a cross-functional Advancement Team responsible for fundraising, marketing, volunteer cultivation, major gifts, planned giving, corporate philanthropic support and grant writing in addition to supervising department staff.

Specific Responsibilities
Leadership, Strategy, and Vision
  • Work closely with the executive leadership team, Board of Directors and CEO to lead the creation and implementation of the organization’s fundraising strategy
  • Educate and train staff and board members in donor cultivation and fundraising techniques
  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization and articulate our mission to external constituents
  • Work with the CEO to ensure board members are engaged and energized; be the lead staff representative on the Advancement Committee
  • Produce regular high-level analytic reports for senior management that synthesize financial progress and fundraising trends
Collaborate with program leaders to anticipate and evaluate future financial needs, developing robust revenue forecasts and participating in the regular budgeting process.
  • Lead public relations efforts and ensure consistent messaging and branding in all internal and external communications

Fund Development & Revenue Generation
  • Lead efforts to raise sufficient (amount to be set each fiscal year) revenue through corporate, individual, foundation, faith community and government funding; personally conduct gift solicitations
  • Identify and obtain new revenue streams with a focus on increasing sustainable, unrestricted, sources of revenue
  • Work closely with the CEO to strategically pivot off of a successful capital campaign for sustained growth; lead the rollout of an endowment/planned giving program
  • Partner with CEO, Board of Directors and Advancement Team to deepen existing funder relationships and cultivate new supporters; manage corresponding funder assignments
  • Lead the reporting and evaluation of fundraising initiatives using metrics and key performance indicators

Operations and Team Management
  • Effectively manage the Advancement department's day-to-day operations; recruit, train, and mentor staff. Continually review departmental infrastructure to ensure support of the organization's revenue goals
  • Evaluate the ROI (return on investment) for all department activities; administer salary adjustments
  • Collaborate with all departments within the organization to create an understanding of and appreciation for the development function; foster an environment of cohesiveness and collaboration

Experience
  • Program Leadership and Management: Experience developing and operationalizing strategies that have taken organizations to their next stage of growth; demonstrated success managing funder relationships preferred
  • Team Building and Development: Experience recruiting, managing, and developing a strong team of staff—both managers and support personnel; ability to motivate and mentor his/her team, ideally using a servant-leader model of leadership
  • Exceptional Communication and Influencing Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive, credible, and polished communicator; able to work with internal and external partners

Qualifications
  • Ability to articulate and align with the faith-based mission and values of Urban Ventures
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in a relevant field preferred, with 7+ years of diverse development/fundraising experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector, or equivalent experience in sales
  • Experience leading a team of advancement professionals or related fields; interested in building scalable systems for a growing organization
  • Broad knowledge of the development and fundraising process as it relates to donors, foundations, corporations, faith communities and government entities; deep understanding of the unique needs and interests of major donors at Urban Ventures
  • Superior skills in budgeting, financial analysis, prospecting, and project management; ability to distill and communicate important information effectively via executive summaries
  • High capacity for leadership; ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups of people, especially within communities of color
  • Committed to working collaboratively with a management team of senior professionals; a team player who can operate effectively in a collegial, yet demanding, work environment
  • Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality; high integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
