APMG's primary operating divisions Minnesota Public Radio, Southern California Public Radio and American Public Media offer multi-regional FM broadcast channels, website, mobile and social media channels, live events, national content creation and distribution. Together, these divisions operate 49 public radio stations and 42 translators serving regional audiences in eight states from Minnesota, Michigan and the Upper Midwest to Idaho and California; distribute a portfolio of more than twenty national programs reaching nearly 20MM listeners weekly through 1,000 radio stations; serve rapidly growing audiences on digital, social and mobile platforms; and produce an increasing and diverse array of podcasts featuring the best in food, culture, entertainment, mental health, water, early brain development, business and investigative journalism.

Your Role:
The Major Gifts Officer is an integral part of Minnesota Public Radio | American Public Media major gifts team. The Major Gifts Officer meets with donors and prospects to cultivate, solicit and steward special initiative fundraising gifts and prominent operating gifts of the Leadership and President’s Circles. This position collaborates with the major gifts team, the Philanthropic Development team and MPR |APM divisions to meet revenue goals. Approximately 50% of their time will be spent visiting with and cultivating prospects in-person and virtually. The Philanthropic Development team is fully committed to building and nurturing a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace culture.

Expected Compensation: 64,300.00 to $85,000 annually. Exact salary determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure and internal equity.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Qualifies and strategically cultivates, solicits and stewards donors and prospects.
  • Manages a dedicated portfolio of donors and prospects within moves management.
  • Develops written proposals, renewal letters, and other donor communications.
  • Coordinates the involvement of natural partners within the organization.
  • Participates in major donor events locally, virtually and throughout Minnesota.
  • Documents donor contacts in donor management software following established protocols.
  • Conducts regular face-to-face and virtual visits with donors and prospects.
  • Provides regular reports on prospect management and fundraising results.
  • Manages special projects and other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of applicable or equivalent work experience required. Experience should include proven ability to generate significant support from donors or others.
  • Previous experience working directly with donors and volunteers.
  • Strong understanding of the major gift process of Identification, Qualification, Cultivation, Solicitation and Stewardship.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Passion for public media’s mission and programming.
  • Skill and experience in building and maintaining relationships, including an aptitude for engaging and motivating donors and prospects, while achieving bottom-line results.
  • A strategic thinker and good listener who has demonstrated resourcefulness in working collaboratively with many constituencies.
  • Develop effective engagement plans to strengthen donor relationships and explore avenues for support.
  • Motivated, creative, and organized self-starter and team player.
  • Ability and desire to embrace values of diversity, equity and inclusion by actively participating in trainings and group discussions that further your own cultural fluency
  • Proven track record of successfully meeting revenue targets both through upgrading existing accounts, and new prospecting.
  • Able to participate in donor events, including occasional evenings and weekends, and travel to donor meetings throughout the Twin Cities Metro area and parts of Minnesota.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate the mission of MPR in a compelling fashion.
  • Able to multi-task and handle multiple projects and demonstrated time management skills.
  • Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook)
  • Must be able to exercise professional discretion and good judgment.
  • Must maintain a high degree of confidentiality in an information-rich environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or donor databases, Zoom, Slack, SharePoint a plus
  • Experience in soliciting gifts within the range of $5,000-$100,000 + preferred.
  • Knowledge of Twin Cities and greater Minnesota philanthropic communities.
  • Knowledge of planned giving vehicles and ability to identify strong prospects.
