Join AFP Minnesota at our first hybrid event of 2022. Three reports will be presented with the opportunity for discussion and questions as well. Joshua Birkholz, CEO of BWF, will present the 2022 Give USA Report. Mala Thao will present the High-Net-Worth report released by the Donors of Color Network.  To conclude, Anne Soto will share the GTCUW most recent grants.

 

Presenters: 

Josh Birkholz, chief executive officer of the global fundraising consultancy BWF, is a leader in big philanthropy and innovator for the business of fundraising. In his 17 years of consulting the leading nonprofits, universities, and healthcare centers around the world, Josh has redefined how we look at modern program design, fundraising in a smart economy, and branding in the high-net-worth marketplace.

Josh is widely regarded as a trailblazer of 21st-century development strategies, having authored the sought-after book Fundraising Analytics: Using Data to Guide Strategy and contributed to the books A Kaleidoscope of Prospect Development and Return on Character.

 Josh is the Vice Chair of the Giving USA Foundation, having chaired the Advisory Council on Methodology for several years. He is an instructor at the Rice University Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership. He has the Crystal Apple Award for Teaching Excellence from CASE. And, he is a recipient of the prestigious Apra Visionary award for his contributions to prospect development.



Mala Thao,
as the Associate Vice President of Major Gifts, Mala helps donors become smarter philanthropists and strengthens Greater Twin Cities United Way’s mission to advocate for social good and develop solutions to address the challenges communities face.

Mala started her career in philanthropy more than 20 years ago with Women’s Foundation of Minnesota and gained additional fundraising experience in various nonprofits and foundations, such as Washburn Center for Children, Asian American/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy, Indian Land Tenure Foundation and American Red Cross. Prior to joining GTCUW, Mala was a philanthropic advisor at Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation for 10 years.

Mala grew up on St. Paul’s Eastside and now calls the city’s Frogtown neighborhood home. She is a fierce advocate for social justice and has volunteered on boards and committees, such as Headwaters Foundation for Justice and Facilitating Race & Equity Conference (FREC). Mala has been appointed by the Mayor of St. Paul to serve as Commissioner of the Human Rights & Equal Economic Opportunity (HREEO) and has also been appointed by the Metropolitan Council to serve on the Livable Communities Advisory Committee (LCAC). When Mala is not working or fighting for social justice, she spends her time as a foodie.

 

Anne Soto, is the Senior Director of Grantmaking on the Community Impact team at Greater Twin Cities United Way. In this role, she leads a team centered on impacting regional need by strengthening and supporting the nonprofit sector and accelerating new solutions defined by community.

Prior to joining the United Way, Anne helped to launch Educate78, an Oakland-based direct service nonprofit. She has deep experience in philanthropy, including at New Schools Venture Fund, a venture philanthropy model supporting early-stage nonprofits, and the Entrepreneurs Foundation.

As the mother of 3 kids and a resident of Minneapolis, she cares deeply about creating an inclusive Twin Cities community where all people can thrive.

Your payment helps us honor our speakers time and expertise with a stipend and cover the costs of technology and technical support for promotion, registration, and the session. The average cost per person is about $25. If you would like to assist with covering the cost of the session for another individual, you can enter your payment under the donation section.
