INTRODUCTION
The Development Officer executes the organization’s strategy and plans for individual donors, local business leaders, and civic and faith groups, to meet organizational fundraising goals. This includes the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current and prospective donors, cultivating relationships with local White Bear area businesses, as well as local civic and faith groups. This position is also responsible for coordinating grants management, including a grants strategy, the resources needed to write competitive grants, as well as tracking and managing the grants reporting function.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the fundraising efforts at White Bear Area Food Shelf (WBAFS). This is a newly created position as the organization has robust plans for growth. There is an opportunity for significant personal and professional growth for the successful candidate.

GENERAL PURPOSE
The Development Officer reports to the Operation Manager and meets frequently with the Executive Director and Operations Manager to share updates on donor cultivation progress as well as grant coordination. A primary objective for the Development Officer is to qualify donors and assess which donors have the capacity and inclination to consider larger giving - whether for continued operations funding or potentially for larger capital campaign needs. The Development Officer will create overall donor engagement strategies, and assist in identifying high-net-worth donors that the Executive Director is best qualified to cultivate for major gifts. The Development Officer will lead the effort to establish fundraising goals in conjunction with the Operations Manager and Executive Director and will be instrumental in presenting annual fundraising goals to the
Board.

Another key objective of the Development Officer is to create an overarching grants strategy, grants calendar, grants database, and grants tracking system. Although this position is not responsible for the actual grant writing, the position is responsible for securing the resources - whether through dedicated grant volunteers or paid grant writers, or outside counsel - to ensure grants are submitted on time and tracked appropriately in White Bear Area Food Shelf’s system. They are also responsible for ensuring effective grant reporting is tracked and completed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifies, Qualifies, Cultivates, Solicits, and Stewards individual donors.
  • Employs Moves Management practices to engage donors, understand their philanthropic goals and objectives, and work to align donor goals with the organization’s needs.
  • Once identified, qualified, and cultivated, makes financial asks in a manner that honors the donor’s desire to make a difference.
  • Manages the Annual Campaign, including the Annual Appeal, Annual Report Appeal, Give the Max, etc. Develops fundraising goals and metrics for the Annual Campaign.
  • Assists with the identification and strategic approach for high-net-worth donors for the Executive Director or Board members to meet with.
  • Coordinates overall grants management, including ensuring grant writing resources (internal or external) are brought on board to ensure grants are submitted on time; tracks grant due dates, grant amounts, and reporting functions to ensure maximization of grant opportunities.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, Operations Manager, and Resource & Development Committee of the Board, assists in establishing annual fundraising goals that lead to increased giving.
  • Cultivates local businesses and business leaders to garner their support.
  • Files thorough call reports after each donor meeting to ensure accurate notes are kept and can be used to map out a comprehensive donor engagement strategy.
  • Leads the strategy and deployment of WBAFS’s annual appeal, including the development of a compelling appeal letter.
  • Regularly attends Resource & Development Committee meetings, providing fundraising updates to the Committee.

  • Ability to review and analyze donor data and leverage that data into actionable strategies and tactics that lead to increased fundraising results.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and professionally in all interactions with both internal and external partners.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • 2+ years’ experience in fundraising or related sales with an emphasis on individual donor identification, cultivation, and management.
  • Demonstrated successful track record of increased donor engagement, Moves Management, and giving.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders, including individual donors, business leaders, Board members, Leadership, and staff.
