Director of Foundation, Government, and Corporate Relations

Responsibilities:
Oversight of institutional funding strategy
Serve as the leader of faculty and institutional grants. Provide strategic direction and management to the team to ensure institutional funding priorities and faculty funding needs are met through effective identification, cultivation, and solicitation of foundation, government, and corporate funders. Work collaboratively with the Provost’s office and support team members to ensure the grant process and submissions meet the needs of faculty and the college. 

In consultation with the AVP of Development, set annual goals for foundation, government, and corporate fundraising, and devise annual plans for achieving these goals. Track and report on fundraising metrics and analyze trends and outcomes to inform strategy and decision-making. Plan and oversee the FGCR annual budget.

Build revenue and partnerships
Cultivate and maintain relationships with a portfolio of foundations, government agencies, and corporate partners, understanding the philanthropic interests and priorities to build authentic and mutually beneficial relationships and raise funds. Expand external relationships while leading the team to have a deep understanding of the college’s funding needs and opportunities through collaboration with faculty staff and administration. Prepare proposals and coordinate interactions between representatives of the college and the foundation, government, or foundation representatives.

Oversee the cultivation and solicitation of national funders for institutional priorities, involving key administrators and/or faculty and staff in the grant development efforts, as appropriate.  Increase revenue through the submission of compelling proposals.

Build and oversee the corporate relations work, with an emphasis on the Twin Cities, ensuring integration into the faculty grants work, where appropriate. Serve as the external corporate relations point person, and work with campus partners and FGCR team members to implement the elements of the partnerships. Create and lead campus committees as necessary to strengthen the work through a campus-wide strategy with agreed upon measures of success. Work collaboratively with Career Exploration, Alumni Engagement, Provost’s office, and President’s office to move partnerships forward on campus. 

Represent the college at external events, meetings, and conferences to build awareness of Macalester, with a focus on building the reputation of Macalester in the Twin Cities. 

Oversight of grant compliance
Provide leadership and guidance to colleagues on fundraising practices and grant management. Lead team in assisting faculty in development and editing of grant proposals and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. 

Liaise with other offices regarding policies and procedures related to grant seeking. Maintain strong working relationships with key staff in the Advancement and Business Services divisions of the College. Assure timely review of proposal submissions by Macalester's internal review group, proper recording and acknowledgment of awards, review of award conditions, periodic reporting, and closing out awards once funds are expended. 

Ensure grant reports and gift agreements are well-crafted and show how the partnership supports both the funder and Macalester goals. Work with funders to facilitate changes to a project after an award. Determine a process to identify and vet prospects as well as projects to be funded. Work with the Senior Leadership Team to understand the best way to align funding to the greatest needs in a measurable way. 

Team Management
Supervise and mentor team members in a supportive and productive environment. Train and coach team members, identify individual goals and evaluate progress, resolve conflict, and provide motivation and encouragement.

Infuse DEI best practices including community-centric fundraising approaches in both the work and the culture of the team. Engage in and promote Macalester’s culture of diversity and inclusion, encompassing individuals of any heritage, identity, status, or orientation. 

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of related experience and track record within fundraising including multi-year grant development and proposals, seven figure gift strategies, relationship and partnership building, grant writing, grant management and corporate relations work.
  • Understanding of working with students and faculty or similar segments within an organization.
  • Prior supervisory experience and a demonstrated ability to lead teams.
  • Strong relationship building skills and implementing inspired collaborations and partnerships.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or working with leadership teams, cross departmental projects, and volunteer or staff committees.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, as well as good judgment and discretion.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with contact management systems, funder online portals and grant application tools.
  • Strong budget and finance business acumen.
  • Ability to evaluate and assess reports and data and translate that knowledge into strategy/tactics to grow the fundraising and grant program.
  • A commitment to creating inclusive work environments that embrace diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view.
  • Appreciation of and ability to advocate for the value of a liberal arts education.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred. Experience substitutes for preferred degree.
