Position Overview: The Development Director reports directly to the Board President and will lead and implement the Friends of Ngong Road (FoNR) Development Program. The Development Director works closely with the President, Development Associate and key volunteers including members of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. Friends of Ngong Road is a volunteer-led, team-based organization and the Development Director must be comfortable working in that environment. We seek a mid-career professional who has the ability and drive to take the organization to the next level. It will be essential for the Development Director and Development Associate to work closely together to coordinate their distinct areas of responsibility. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and demonstrated track record.

The primary responsibility of the Development Director is to serve as the lead major gifts officer for Friends of Ngong Road.
1. Lead the strategy and plans to increase the number and total donations of donors above $10,000 cumulative giving by:
- Supporting relationships with 130 current major donors
- Identifying and cultivating donors that have the potential to become major donors; and
- Identifying opportunities for new donors.
2. Working with the President and other key volunteers, develop strategies to cultivate and secure gifts of $10,000+ with a focus on increasing major gifts of $100,000+
3. Create and present new fundraising opportunities, campaigns and/or partnerships that advance the strategic direction of FoNR.
4. Compile, track and report on all contacts with existing donors and new prospects, and clarify next steps, adding relevant data in Salesforce.
5. Work with the President to enhance and expand the volunteer management program.
6. Convene and invigorate the Development Committee. Direct and monitor follow-up activities.
7. Serve as a role model, mentor and coach to one or more Development Associates, suggesting opportunities for growth and career development.

General Organizational Operations:
1. Attend Board meetings of FONR, and when in Kenya, NRCF, as necessary.
2. Develop and maintain good relationships and open communication with Board members and key volunteers.
3. Visit Kenya at FONR expense approximately every other year.
4. Travel to U.S. cities at FONR expense as necessary to assist in visiting and cultivating donors and prospects.
5. Learn and use organization technology to ensure adequate capture of all relevant activities, strategies, results and next steps.
6. Assume other areas of responsibility, projects and targeted campaigns as assigned by the President.
7. Contribute to publication of the monthly Insider’s Newsletter and the FoNR newsletter 4x annually.

Position Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred.
2. 10 years experience in nonprofit fund development with a proven track record of securing major gifts
3. Ability to thrive in a volunteer-led organization.
4. Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership and follow-through to support and manage high-level volunteers.
5. Proven ability to be organized, attentive, and detail-oriented.
6. Documented outstanding oral and written communication skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work both autonomously and as a team member, as circumstances require.
8. Proven ability to meet multiple deadlines, balance numerous projects, and willingness to work together to get things done.
9. Experience with planned giving is highly desirable.
10. Exceptional integrity, energy, professional demeanor and time-management skills.
11. Have knowledge or capacity to learn a variety of computer software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, database (Salesforce); presentation software or other design programs helpful.
12. Event management experience is desirable.
