Director of Principal & Major Gifts

Macalester College | Saint Paul, MN

Join an exceptional team of leaders in an innovative, collaborative, and driven advancement division. The next Director of Principal and Major Gifts will have the opportunity to put their stamp on a team that recently completed a targeted, highly successful campaign and just welcomed a new college president to campus. The Director will oversee a team of 5+ professionals whose sole focus is raising major and principal gifts, both via outright gifts and pledges and planned gifts.

Responsibilities
In keeping with its mission, Macalester has prioritized economic diversity. This has created a dynamic and unique community, while at the same time reducing the exceptionally wealthy, legacy constituencies common to many of our peer institutions. As a result, we have to be more resourceful and thoughtful in our approach to major and principal giving. We seek a leader who can create opportunities for more alumni to be able to make major gifts via outright, planned giving and other techniques; accelerate the process of getting to gift conversations not just through metrics, but through innovative partnerships and engagement with other programs in Advancement, partners across the college, and alumni and parent volunteers; and recruit and develop new gift officers in order to broaden our perspectives and increase our diversity.

To this end, the Director is responsible for raising funds from alumni across the country and internationally through effective solicitation, stewardship and cultivation processes. This leader will work with donor relations to ensure equitable recognition and stewardship of all donors, and will serve as a mentor and collaborator with a team of major gift officers. Finally, the Director will provide principal gift support and strategy, as needed, and monitor progress to goal for principal and major gifts activity and revenue.

Qualifications
Director of Principal and Major Gifts candidates should demonstrate the following:

3 to 5+ years of experience within fundraising and development and personal success raising outright and planned major and principal gifts.
Outstanding interpersonal and relationship-building skills, including listening and writing skills.
Experience and demonstrated success in managing high-level volunteers to help in the donor development cycle.
Proven people-management skills that foster interdepartmental teamwork, employee ownership, and high standards in a mission-driven environment.
A commitment to creating inclusive work environments that embrace diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view.
High degree of integrity and ethical decision making.
An authentic appreciation for liberal arts education and the college’s mission.
