Job Description: Grant Writer

Position Summary
Reporting to the director of development, the grant writer is responsible for meeting or exceeding fund-raising goals and developing strategies to advance grant opportunities. The grant writer manages existing foundation and government relationships and identifies and cultivates new relationships in service of the mission of The Trust. The role is responsible for researching the funding priorities of a broad range of grant-making agencies and influencing fund-raising strategies and programming outcomes. The role is also responsible for writing and submitting letters of interest, writing, and submitting grant applications, planning site visits, fulfilling reporting requirements, and meeting all deadlines. The grant writer works with other development officers to build comprehensive engagement strategies and with programming leads to ensure grant related outcomes are met.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Foundation and Grant Management
  • Work with the director of development to set appropriate revenue goals and identify fundable programs and projects.
  • Develop a month-by-month institutional donor plan for the year to meet or exceed goals and grow foundations and grants over time.
  • Perform research for new grant opportunities and proposals, ensuring funding priorities align with those of the Trust.
  • Write, prepare, and submit letters of inquiry and proposals for foundations, corporations, and government funded opportunities.
  • Manage grant applications.
  • Create external budgets for the organization, programs and projects and other attachments as needed.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with foundations.
  • Serve as a communications conduit to foundation personnel, program officers, and other key individuals by informing them of Trust news and events, engaging and inviting participation where appropriate.
  • Represent the Trust at assigned fundraising events.

Data management and reporting
  • Comply with database standards to ensure accurate records.
  • Keep submitted proposals and related documents organized and accurate.
  • Advise and participate in grant fulfillment and evaluation tasks. Work with the programming teams to ensure all reporting guidelines are met.
  • Track progress on grant-funded activities and prepare reports.

Internal partnerships
  • Advise programming staff to ensure programs align with institutional outcomes, the funding communities’ interests and priorities, and internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Work with finance to ensure timely allocation of grant funds and revenue projections.
  • Share needs and recommendations for improving functionality of Salesforce database.
  • Partner with the event and development teams in the planning and implementation of fundraising events.

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree or 2 to 4 years of related experience.
  • Experience with funder cultivation strategies and grant management.
  • Experience with data collection and outcome evaluation in a program development context.
  • Ability to strategically position grant projects within existing programs.
  • Established relationship with funders and knowledge of the Minnesota corporate, government and foundation funders.
  • Strong analytical and prospect research skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Model The Trust’s values, ethics and performance standards for the team.
  • Active commitment to establishing a productive, collaborative culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to balance multiple competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills, project management skills and time management skills.
  • Able to keep confidential information private and secure.
  • Flexible and willing to adapt to change.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience working with a fundraising database.
