Bell Museum Membership & Annual Giving Manager

Salary Range: $59,000 - $75,000

This is a time of growth and opportunity for the Bell Museum as the Bell celebrates its’ 150th anniversary in 2022. As the Membership & Annual Giving Manager, you will have the opportunity to work for a primarily public-facing unit of the University of Minnesota (as part of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences - CFANS), while leveraging the horsepower, expertise and resources of the University of Minnesota Foundation. The Membership & Annual Giving Manager position is incredibly dynamic - offering the opportunity to collaborate across all internal Bell Museum teams to build a sustainable membership program and member experience. This position plays a critical role in creating and implementing an annual giving strategy for the Bell Museum that incorporates direct mail and digital communication strategies to communicate the impact of donors to the museum and its mission. This position also supervises student and administrative support staff. The Bell Museum development department embraces new ideas and perspectives as we raise philanthropic support for the Bell Museums key priority areas including: Research & Collections, Museum without Boundaries, Curiosity Catalyst, Minnesota’s Astronomy Classroom and Creative by Nature. This role also plays a critical role in the Bell Museum’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts as we aim to remove barriers of entry to the museum.

What you’ll do:
Membership and Annual Giving Program Development and Management - 50%

Membership
  • Drive and implement strategies for a comprehensive membership program
  • Create and achieve membership goals based on datadriven decision making
  • Collaborate to create written membership materials that capture the Bell experience
  • Thoughtful collaborator and project manager
  • Collaborate with UMN Tickets on membership database (Audience View)
  • Collaborate with UMN Foundation on integration of membership data into Foundation donor database (DMS)
  • Collaborate with Bell Museum Marketing and Visitor Services departments to create a strong membership presence onsite and support onsite sales

Annual Giving Program Management
  • Create and implement annual giving strategy that supports the individual giving pipeline for the Bell Museum aimed at increasing donors and gift size
  • Collaborate with the Bell Marketing department and UMN Foundation Annual Giving and digital teams on implementation of annual giving appeals (directl mail, email, text, social media)
  • Collaborate with Bell Museum departments to support programmatic priority areas through targeted annual giving micro-campaigns
  • Collaborate with UMN Foundation to become an expert at requesting queries to maximize annual giving reach

Member and Donor Relations, Stewardship, and Events – 25%
  • Serve as the primary contact for annual fund donors and for members.
  • Build and maintain relationships with members, donors, and community partners.
  • Develop member/donor engagement plan that maximizes Bell events and unique opportunities and partnerships (onsite, virtual)
  • Assist in developing and executing donor recognition events and activities, in collaboration with the Development Director, Bell staff.
  • Partner with members of the Development Team on donor engagement, stewardship and recognition
  • Identify members and annual giving donors with potential to become mid-level to major gift donors coordinating with the Bell’s front-line fundraising team

Data Management, Analysis, and Budget – 15%
  • Collaborate with UMN Foundation partners to utilize membership and annual giving data to support Bell development goals
  • Commitment to the maintenance and integrity of the membership and DMS development database.
  • Develop and maintain regular reporting systems. Analyze membership data and revenue to determine member behavior and effectiveness of membership solicitation/retention work plan and marketing campaigns.
  • Effectively and efficiently leverage data on membership and annual giving to drive decision making and strategy.

Supervise and Train Staff – 10%
  • Hires, supervises, directs, trains, and evaluates 1 full-time employee (Executive Assistant) and 1 student staff member.
  • Develop and deliver membership training to improve awareness of benefits, sales skills, and data-entry processes for frontline staff in Visitor Services.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors' degree plus four (4) years of progressive experience in alumni relations, advancement, membership, development or related area.
  • Experience with events management or project management.
  • Requires occasional attendance at some weekend and evening events.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar computer software. (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point)

  • Experience working for a mission-centered nonprofit organization.
  • Strong experience with data management and analysis.
  • Master storyteller - excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thrives in a collaborative environment.
