The Ordway is the arts epicenter of Saint Paul, Minnesota, and one of the leading nonprofits performing arts centers in the country. Founded on the belief that performing arts should be wide-ranging and accessible to all, the Ordway is home to a variety of performances that encompass the finest in Broadway musicals, concerts, dance and vocal artists. Known as the most comfortable place to catch a show in Minnesota, the Ordway includes a magnificent 1,900-seat Music Theater, a state-of-the-art 1,100-seat Concert Hall and spacious lobbies. The Ordway aims to reflect the communities it serves and address barriers to ensure everyone can experience the power of the performing arts.

Position Purpose
Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement, the Director of Institutional Relations serves as a key member of the Advancement Department and manages a portfolio of 20-30 foundations, corporations, government funders, totaling $2-2.5M annually to the Ordway’s contributed revenue goal. The Director will work with the Vice President and President and CEO to develop strategies to maximize and grow institutional funding, secure new grants, steward existing relationships, and identify and cultivate potential new supporters. The individual in this position will create high quality, persuasive proposals and reports, and be responsible for meeting all application, renewal, and reporting criteria for institutional partners. The Director will work closely with program staff to ensure that all proposals and reports accurately reflect the Ordway’s mission and priorities. The ideal candidate will be a results-oriented, mission-driven individual and have excellent written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills that forge effective donor and internal stakeholder relationships.

Key Performance Areas:
  • Lead the advancement strategy for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of institutional funders.
  • Maintain a comprehensive calendar of application and reporting deadlines and ensure that all deadlines are met.
  • Develop a calendar of Ordway priority initiatives in collaboration with leadership and staff and identify funding opportunities to ensure a steady funding stream from corporations, foundations and government agencies.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with appropriate granting agencies that lead to new funding and overall increased financial support of operations.
  • Oversee corporate, sponsorship, foundation and government contributed revenue activities including prospecting, proposal submission, stewardship and grant compliance reporting.
  • Research institutional entities, grant opportunities and high-potential partnerships that will help advance the overall work of the Ordway.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of the Ordway, its history, programs, initiatives, and priorities.
  • Actively participate in departmental revenue and expense budget planning, balancing ambitious goals with accurate forecasting of foundation and government revenue.
  • Use AudienceView efficiently and in compliance with established procedures.

Other Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years experience in securing grants and managing partnerships with foundations and government agencies.
  • Minimum of five (5) years professional experience in relevant advancement/communications positions of increasing scope and responsibility required.
  • Experience with Twin Cities/MN funding community highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated success and experience in creating successful grant proposals and project budgets.
  • Experience as a grant writer with the ability to translate complex issues into fundraising goals and objectives and articulate the Ordway’s mission to the funding community.
  • Excellent oral, written, active listening and presentation skills and ability to serve as an Ordway spokesperson in business settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team setting and collaborate across departments and teams through communication, modeling appropriate behavior, optimism, and high achievement.
  • Ability to work independently with clear roles and deliverables.
  • Ability to successfully present projects and programs to prospects, donors and Ordway leadership.
  • Ability to manage multiple demands and deadlines, including excellent time management and organization skills, with strong detail orientation and follow-through.
  • Exercises good judgement and demonstrates an understanding of ethics related to fundraising activities and handles confidential and privileged information with discretion and appropriate urgency.
  • Understanding of database management, reporting, business processing and compliance of foundation and government contracts/agreements.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills. Familiarity with fundraising software a plus.
  • Ability to travel and work occasional nights and weekends.
