The Depot Foundation was founded in 1979 to preserve the Historic Union Depot as a vibrant and welcoming forum for the arts, culture, and history through growing and then managing and growing a permanent endowment. Today the Depot Foundation continues to oversee private giving that enriches our region with arts and culture.

Position Overview:
The Depot Foundation is seeking a full-time Development Director to organize and implement systems that will ensure an effective and efficient development effort. This includes all aspects of fundraising in support of the Depot Foundation including an annual campaign, corporate and individual giving strategies, planned giving, and special events. This position will work closely with the Board and the Depot Foundation Administrator as well as serve as the public “face” of the Foundation.

Responsibilities Include:
Donor Relations
Aggressively lead and direct the fundraising activities from individual and corporate sources. This includes the identification and cultivation of individual donors, with a particular focus on planned giving. Identify and expand corporate donors and sponsorship opportunities. Nurture relationships with current individual and corporate donors through well-written communications and personal contacts and visits. Effectively move donors from lower-level donating up to major gifts and estate giving. Play an active, public role as a spokesperson and representative of the Depot Foundation in the community. Articulate to the community the relationship between the Depot Foundation, The Historic Union Depot, and the tenants that occupy its space. Successfully run the annual campaign. Create and maintain a robust social media campaign to gain visibility. Ensure proper maintenance of development files and records in collaboration with the Depot Foundation Administrator.

Board Relations
Take an active role in serving and supporting the Board. Ensure that Board members stay up to date on your efforts and results. Provide monthly development reports. Develop work plans, timelines, and budgets for meeting the Board’s revenue goals. Assist the Board in their efforts toward becoming a public foundation once again. Work closely with the Depot Foundation Administrator to ensure smooth operations of development work.

Historic Depot Relations
Develop a relationship with Depot management and tenants of the historic building. Ensure clear communication regarding the Foundation fundraising efforts being beneficial and supplemental to each tenant’s fundraising efforts, not in competition for resources. Current tenants include the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, St. Louis County Historical Society, Duluth Art Institute, North Shore Scenic Railroad, The Duluth Playhouse, Minnesota Ballet, and the Arrowhead Chorale.

Special Events
Work closely with the Circle of Friends Committee to assist in the production of the annual recognition event. Develop exciting new ideas for fundraising and growth opportunities based on the current philanthropic landscape.

Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher required.
  • 5 years of successful fundraising experience.
  • Experience with planned giving, endowments, and capital campaigns.
  • Background in the cultivation and solicitation of individual and corporate donors, and a proven track record in the management of successful development programs.
  • Experience in grant writing.
  • Demonstrate initiative, self-confidence, energy, and entrepreneurial skills as someone who has the capability to work independently and as a self-starter.
  • Be a personable, positive, and social individual with integrity and the ability to work well with directors and donors.
  • Take an active public role in the cultivation and solicitation of donors, while also working behind the scenes to ensure smooth operations.
  • Be very well-organized, willing to work diligently and hands-on to get the job done, and with the flexibility necessary to balance the many challenges inherent in a dynamic foundation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, computer literacy, financial knowledge, and the ability to inspire those in the community to appreciate The Depot.
  • Understand and support the Depot’s mission and appreciate the important role arts and culture play in the life of a vibrant community and have the ability to articulate this mission and role to others.
