The Director of Advancement is a face of DARTS in the community, serving as chief relationship builder and chief storyteller for the organization. The director is a leading advocate for the belief that our communities are strongest when all ages have the opportunity to thrive and brings that passion for older adults and intergenerational connections to their messaging.
- $75,000 - $85,000 annual salary

- The Director of Advancement communicates DARTS mission and values, tying them to current community needs. This position requires building genuine and deep relationships with individuals, businesses, civic and community organizations. This role is a leader in ensuring community connections are inclusive and reflect the overall population. The Director of Advancement is accountable for development results and leading the President, Board of Directors, and staff in development activities. The role embraces “development as a whole” to cultivate the development culture and guides the team to use their own voices to tell the community about DARTS vision, mission, and values. Tell the “why” stories and quantify impact. As the program directors innovate ways to grow or adapt DARTS services to meet emerging needs, this role helps frame the business plan and develop partner relationships which will advance the programs.
- This role leads advancement activities for the agency and Board of Directors by setting the vision, creating, and managing the budget and building new relationships which develop a strong donation pipeline. The advancement strategy engages the community through events, designated gifts, grant requests, general gifts, and volunteer opportunities. The position works closely with the President, the other members of the senior leadership team, and the communications team. The position leads volunteer engagement and manages the Volunteer Manager and the Learning Buddies Program Manager. This position offers some flexibility in work hours and location, as some duties will occur outside the normal 9-5 work day. Mileage beyond normal commute is reimbursed.
- Strategic Planning Community Relations
- Work closely with Finance and Endowment partners to anticipate giving trends.
- Integrate volunteer usage into organization strategy.
- Work with the President to define communication strategy and annual themes.
- Strategic Relationship Development
- Work with the leadership team to articulate business cases and build partnerships for strategic growth.
- Develop relationships that may be key partners or funders.
- Develop diverse relationships in the community and bring the community values to DARTS programming.
- Develop deep business connections and build a connection network ensuring next generation connections with DARTS and our strategic funding partners.
- Engage with community organizations to advocate for older community members.
- Maintain excellent donor, board member, volunteer relations and help to communicate strategic vision to those groups.
- Human Resources
- Lead the volunteer, grant and development teams, maintaining a climate which attracts, retains and motivates quality, diverse people - both staff and volunteer.
- Obtain and retain the required skills to perform all job duties related to the provision of service for the purpose of coaching, training, evaluating, and supporting staff.
- Assure consistent staffing of DARTS’ Volunteer Manager, Grant Specialist and Learning Buddies Program positions.
- Create succession plans for key roles.
- Communicate and practice DARTS Mission and Values for staff and volunteers.
- Budget Development and Oversight
- Develop department and special events budgets which motivate growth and foresee industry trends.
- Drive and measure revenue projections. Accurately project revenues and expense for special events, appeals.
- Help teams develop budgets and create business plans for new volunteer programs.
- Optimize and measure expenditures.
- Contribute to agency-wide discussion about donation and grant revenue and measure results.
- Actively determine and measure key metrics to indicate donor engagement.
- Partner with the finance team to properly log donations and implement new initiatives.
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Services, Nonprofit Management or related fields.
- Experience in fundraising, relationship management, development.
- 5+ years’ experience in human services sector and people management.
- Experience with fundraising software; Give MN or Give Smart experience a plus.
