Job Summary
UWM's Office for Development & Alumni Relations seeks a self-starter who is interested in building a career in one-on-one fund development. The Leadership Annual Giving Officer position is a new and critical position within our fund development staff structure. We seek an individual who will develop relationships with and secure philanthropic gifts from donors/prospects, primarily alumni, who are capable of making gifts of $1,000- $25,000. The Leadership Annual Giving Officer will elevate donors/ prospects from annual gift to leadership annual gift commitments and determine if they are major gift prospects for the university. With success, this position will put the right individual on a path to greater responsibility securing major gifts for UWM. It is a meaningful time to join UWM's Development & Alumni Relations department as we look to build fundraising capabilities in advance of the university's next major fundraising campaign.
Develop and execute an annual plan for leadership annual giving donors/prospects. Responsibilities include:

Fund Development:
  • Annual cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects/donors in the $1,000 - 24,999 range.
  • Use donor data base systems to document contacts and connections with constituents.
  • Partner with directors of development to gather information useful in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding relationships with leadership annual giving prospects.
  • Meet performance metrics established by the department and supervisor which include but are not limited to reports on substantive contacts, requests in pipeline, closed gifts, and qualification calls.
  • Prepare letters, memoranda, inquires, and proposals supporting the university's private philanthropic efforts.
  • Steward donors and acknowledge gifts utilizing UWM Foundation procedures and guidelines.
  • Communicate with the Department of Financial Aid and other development staff to promote scholarship availability and to meet donor criteria expectations.
  • Leadership Annual Giving Program
  • In partnership with leadership, help further define a leadership annual gift at UWM and how to manage leadership annual giving donors.
  • Create best practices for managing leadership annual giving relationships and their solicitation and stewardship for maximum results.
  • Build a segment leadership annual giving donors/prospects with the support of research and prospect management, develop and execute strategies to acquire new donors at the leadership level.
  • Strengthen the continuum of donors and their progression from Annual Giving to Leadership Annual Giving and Major Giving.
  • Enhance Alumni Giving Program
  • Partner with Alumni Relations, Donor Relations and Annual Giving to create marketing and communication pieces directed to current and potential leadership annual giving donors.
  • Represent the university at alumni/development functions as appropriate.
  • Build a Culture of Philanthropy
  • Acquire a level of expertise about the university and specific schools, colleges, units, departments, and programs as needed.
  • Engage faculty and staff to share, discover and develop a culture of philanthropy.
  • Contribute to team by building a constructive and collaborative atmosphere within the department to maximize results.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of two-years professional fundraising experience, or equivalent experience in related field
  • Demonstrated track record of successful annual gift solicitation, or equivalent measurable achievement in another field

Preferred Qualifications
  • Broad-based fundraising experience in direct mail, annual giving, proposal and report preparation and/or event planning
  • Strong written, verbal and communication skills
  • Evidence of success working effectively with diverse constituencies and in a team environment
  • Academic fundraising experience
  • Experience utilizing donor database or contact management systems
