SUMMARY
The primary duties of the Director of External Relations are to increase the visibility and advance the financial position of American Indian OIC among prospective donors, partners, and program participants. The director is a member of American Indian OIC’s leadership team and also plays an instrumental role in laying the groundwork for a future capital campaign.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and execute annual external relations plan that results in increased revenues and enrollment for American Indian OIC’s programs and services
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with corporations, foundations, employers, individuals, and government leaders to advance AIOIC’s strategic goals
- Plan and execute monthly external events including fundraisers, community celebrations, program recognitions/events, and corporate volunteer opportunities
- Develop and distribute donor campaigns, fundraising appeals, print and electronic newsletters, and annual reports
- Regularly report fundraising outcomes and activities to program teams, finance staff, and the board of directors
- Identify media opportunities, develop and distribute media releases, and serve as key point person for media inquiries
- Manage donor database (Bloomerang), and track and acknowledge gifts
- Manage and track group and individual volunteers and connect them to appropriate volunteer opportunities within AIOIC.
- Provide leadership and management of external relations team including a grantwriter, communications coordinator, employer relations coordinator, and admin staff.
- Manage grant writing staff and support the development and submission of funding proposals, reports, and follow-up documentation to granting and contracting entities
- Oversee AIOIC’s brands and brand assets and ensure proper application and usage among internal and external partners
- Manage marketing staff and support agency communications activities like social media management, paid advertising, and community tabling events
- Conduct prospect research, and stay abreast of industry trends by attending trainings and reviewing reports and publications
- Act as key agency leader, and participate in leadership meetings and strategic planning

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Cultural competency working in a diverse environment
- Three years’ previous experience in fund development or marketing role
- Exceptional relationship cultivation and management skills
- Results-oriented and goal driven
- Strong organizational skills - ability to meet and manage multiple deadlines and prioritize
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite/365 and comfort using web-based portals and applications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Operates effectively both autonomously and in a team environment
Preferred:
- Understanding of Minnesota’s Indigenous communities, cultures, and practices.
- Five years’ previous experience in a leadership role in fundraising and marketing in the nonprofit sector
- Previous experience managing staff and motivating team members to achieve goals
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in applicable coursework
- Previous experience managing and reporting from a donor database system and with communications tools like MailChimp, Canva, and Adobe.

Compensation & Status
The director of external relations is a full-time, exempt position with compensation starting at $85,000 annually. Business hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm, however occasional weekend and evening hours may be required as needed. This position qualifies for medical, dental, retirement, and time-off benefits, with accrual of up to five paid vacation weeks in the first year of employment, plus at least twelve paid holidays. Free onsite parking is available. With approval from their supervisor, this position may be afforded limited remote work privileges.
About American Indian OIC
American Indian OIC (AIOIC) was established in 1979 to address the education and employment disparities faced by Native American families living in and around South Minneapolis. The organization was founded as a career counseling provider, but now offers multi-faceted education and workforce development services through its alternative high school, Adult Basic Education program, job training center, and career counseling services. The goal of these programs is to give people the foundational education and support needed to pursue meaningful career opportunities.
