Overview:
The Chief Development Officer will provide strategic vision, leadership, and direction for all fundraising, corporate engagement, volunteerism, and other development activities for the University of Minnesota Duluth.
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) has responsibility for strategy, planning and implementation related to the University’s overall fundraising, and corporate engagement strategies. They serve as the lead fundraiser for the university, donor relations, development marketing, and related development activities. The Director of Alumni Relations has a dotted line report to the CDO and the CDO coordinates on alumni relations and engagement. Reporting directly to the Chancellor of UMD, the Chief Development Officer works to implement the Chancellor’s vision of high impact philanthropy and engagement with a broad range of UMD stakeholders. The Chief Development Officer communicates the strategy, policy, key issues, and annual reporting with university and campus leadership and serves as a member of the University leadership group. The position leads an overall team of approximately 10 - 15 staff.
The Chief Development Officer works closely with the University of Minnesota Foundation to utilize and leverage the central resources and services that support and enhance the UMD development program. The University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) is the philanthropic foundation that accepts and manages gifts for the University of Minnesota and serves as the official fundraising arm of the University. It provides centralized fundraising programs and services for the entire University development community. This individual has a dotted line relationship with a senior development leader at UMF.
Salary range based on experience: $165,000 - $190,000.
Primary Responsibilities:
Strategy and Goal Setting (40%)
● Plan and implement a comprehensive strategic plan and goals for the University of Minnesota Duluth’s development program in support of the University’s mission, vision, and goals.
● Lead the planning and implementation for the University’s participation in any University-wide campaigns.
● Provide guidance as the Chancellor’s chief advisor in matters related to development, and as appropriate seek the counsel and expertise of University partners at the University of Minnesota Foundation.
● Build and maintain productive working relationships with Vice Chancellors, Deans, academic department heads, faculty, and administrators throughout the University of Minnesota Duluth to thoroughly understand their programs, priorities, and constituents and to collaborate on engaging alumni and donors in support of development activities.
● Facilitate effective collaborative relationships with other development offices across the system.
● Serve as a member of the Chancellor’s Leadership Team. Work with other senior administrators across the university to identify and define priority needs to be funded through private support.
● Participate as a member of the Chief Development Officer community by attending monthly meetings and participate in work groups that inform and advance policies and activities of the University Development Community.
Principal and Major Gifts (30%)
● Facilitate the overall engagement with a portfolio of the University’s top principal and major gift donors, prospects, volunteers, and advocates. Guide their engagement with the Chancellor and as appropriate, and regularly travel locally and nationally with the Chancellor or Deans to meet alumni, friends, corporate and foundation leaders.
● Manage a targeted portfolio of ~50 high-level principal prospects, using a focused and accountable approach of strategy development, engagement with the Chancellor, and implementation. Secure major gifts at the $100,000 and above level supporting key university priorities.
● Lead a team responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding principal and major gift donors; creating, coordinating, and writing funding proposals directed at individuals, corporations and foundations; and ensuring consistent message throughout the University and its units. Encourage and facilitate collaboration with other development professionals across the system.
Volunteer and Board Management (5%)
● Participate in any Chancellor level advisory committees and lead a UMD Campaign Committee.
● Provide guidance to collegiate volunteer advisory boards that support the priorities of the University through philanthropic efforts.
● Identify, recruit, and orient philanthropic volunteers, lead meetings, and evaluate performance. Prepare volunteers to participate in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts as needed, as well as other activities aimed at engaging stakeholders.
Staff Management (25%)
● Lead and manage development staff members responsible for major gifts, annual giving, stewardship, development marketing, corporate relations, and special events.
● Provide overall direction to the fundraising team’s strategy and work to interact effectively with current and prospective donors, alumni, corporate partners and other key individuals to achieve annual fundraising goals.
● Manage the team, including recruitment, retention, performance management, and coaching of staff. Work with individual staff members on development planning and training resources.
● Provide exemplary management and coach team members toward improved performance to enhance annual fundraising production and overall stakeholder engagement.
● Manage the overall budget for the office by anticipating costs and prioritizing needs.
● Work collaboratively with the Chief Marketing and Public Relations Officer to advance the goals of the University in philanthropic donations.
● Work collaboratively with the Vice Chancellor for Student Life and the Director of Alumni Relations to advance alumni engagement towards increased philanthropic support.
● Work collaboratively with the development, alumni relations, and events team members to design effective, strategic, and high-impact alumni engagement and donor cultivation and stewardship events for the University and its departments.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree.
● Minimum seven (7) years demonstrated ability to secure major gifts.
● A minimum of three (3) years’ experience leading, supervising or managing multiple development staff, including selection, performance management, and coaching.
● Demonstrated success in qualification, cultivation, solicitation, gift closure, and stewardship of seven-figure or larger gifts.
● Demonstrated strong organizational and management skills.
● Superb oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
● Evidence of the ability to lead cross-functional teams and to work effectively and collaboratively with multiple groups and diverse constituencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
● Master’s Degree or professional degree preferred.
● Effective development management experience in a higher education environment.
● Ten (10) years’ of demonstrated ability to secure major gifts.
● Five (5) years’ experience leading, supervising or managing multiple development staff, including selection, performance management, and coaching.
● Knowledge of the development programs, fundraising, and administration in higher education.
● Demonstrated experience in prospect development and stage management.
● Ability to maintain a travel schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
● Proven experience with volunteer board management.
● Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE)
