Join Northern Star Council and make a difference in the lives of youth and families. Northern Star Scouting seeks a Development Director, Major Gifts and Planned Giving to join our Development Team. The Director develops and executes fundraising strategies and activities to carry forward the mission and vision of Northern Star Scouting. In this ambassador role, the professional cultivates, solicits and stewards major gifts and planned gift prospects to align supporter interests with the strategic objectives of Northern Star Scouting.
This is a full-time, exempt position with a starting annual salary up to $65,000 DOQ. The council offers PTO (equivalent of 16 days annually for new hires) and 11 annual holidays.
Frequent travel within the assigned territory is required. Must maintain a valid driver's license and motor vehicle insurance. Must be able to work full-time days, some evenings and weekends.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage portfolio of about 75 prospects, focus on qualifying and closing gifts of $10,000 plus.
- Work with the Director of Development on a $35 million Planned Giving campaign.
- Organize and create materials for a planned giving campaign, implement campaign strategies.
- Collaborate with the development team to coach, train and develop skills in major gift area.
- Represent Scouting in the community by attending and actively participating in events.
- Write solicitation content and other donor materials as necessary.

- Must have the ability to build and empower a volunteer team, ability to build relationships.
- Good project management skills with effective organization and communication ability.
- Comfortable with public speaking, must enjoy building formal and informal relationships,
- Must be able to communicate effectively with top corporate and community leaders.
- Must have experience with proposal development and writing, as well as working knowledge of planned giving vehicles or proven ability to learn.
- Must be goal-oriented, self-starter, team player and problem-solver.
- Must demonstrate a passion for youth programs; creativity and ability to prioritize multiple projects while adhering to deadlines are important attributes
Qualifications
- Must be at least age 21 unless prohibited by law.
- A Bachelor's Degree is required.
- Minimum 3-5 years of building/managing major gifts program; proven record securing and cultivating $10,000+ gifts or equivalent.
- 1-2 years of experience with planned giving and sales management is highly desirable.
- Ability to interface with Northern Star leaders, teams, board members and volunteers.
- Business/management experience, including budget, supervisory, and program development/implementation.
- Experience in Scouting or other youth organization is helpful, though not required.
