Head of the Lakes United Way | Duluth, MN
Salary Range: $58,000 - $62,000
Reports to: President
Hourly or Exempt: Exempt
Full-time, 37.5 hours per week. Office open Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Must be able to work a flexible schedule with the possibility of some early morning, evening, and weekend work.
Starting salary from $58,000/year to $62,000/year commensurate with education and experience. Health benefits and Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) provided.
The Development Director oversees and helps execute HLUW’s fundraising initiatives, including: planning, interacting with individual and corporate donors, and seeking out opportunities for financial support through grants and sponsorships.
The Development Director participates in United Way’s commitment to excellent customer service through positive relationship-building with donors, community partners, and United Way staff.
As a member of the Leadership team, the Development Director helps to advise and guide the decisions impacting the organization operationally and strategically.
Key Accountabilities: • In partnership with HLUW staff and Board Members, develop strategies and objectives to meet the annual campaign goal
- Analyze and evaluate previous campaign activities and those in progress to plan and monitor work
- Be forward thinking and action oriented in regard to the changing nature of philanthropy, giving options, and HLUW’s programs and services to the community
- Lead development goal setting procedures
- Develop the campaign annual budget
Actively engage top level donors and workplace and labor partners to build positive long-term relationships
- Identify, contact, and develop relationships with new prospects; foster existing relationships
- Initiate, coordinate and execute Lake Superior Leadership Society initiatives with the assistance of the President.
- Develop and execute a year-round campaign communication strategy
- Plan with special events related to the campaign
- Represent HLUW in appropriate civic and professional organizations
- Participate regularly in community networking opportunities such as Chambers of Commerce programs, agency events, etc.
Oversee development processes and procedures
- Lead and collaborate on the design, preparation, distribution, and maintenance of campaign records, reports and communication materials
- Identify and obtain grants and sponsorships
- Lead staff and volunteers to achieve successful campaign processes and outcomes
Provide development-focused leadership, guidance, ideas, and collaborative thinking with the Board and Staff Teams
- Hire, supervise, develop, and engage Campaign and development team members
- Use tact and good judgment in working with others effectively
- Attend regular staff meetings
- Attend and report at Board Meetings
- Connect development work to other aspects of HLUW’s work
- Serve as the staff liaison to the Resource Development Strategy Committee of the Board
- Coordinate and organize monthly Resource Development Strategy Committee meetings
- Coordinate with Marketing and Impact to ensure consistent messaging across HLUW activities

Supervision and Working Relationships:
• Position works under the direct supervision of the President
• Position works with United Way staff, board, donors, workplace and community partners, volunteers, and external vendors as appropriate Education, Training, and Prior Work Experience
Required or Preferred: • Bachelor’s Degree and three-plus years of nonprofit leadership, supervisory, and/or program management experience preferred
• Strong community- and relationship-building skills with diverse groups of individuals or organizations required
• Grant writing experience required
• Demonstrated ability to lead strategic development efforts with quantifiable results
• Must show progressive thinking, with understanding of philanthropic trends and best practices in donor-centered fundraising
• Experience working with volunteer boards and committees
• Strong facilitation and presentation skills
Technical Knowledge:
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook; familiarity with database/customer relationship management systems preferred

The person in this position regularly is required to remain in a stationary position, and frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copier, printer, and scanner.
The person in this position needs to move about inside the office occasionally to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Regular visits to the worksites of HLUW’s workplace partners require the person to move about inside other office spaces as well.
The person in this position frequently communicates with community partners, volunteers, representatives at HLUW workplace partners, HLUW board members, and other members of the HLUW staff team. They must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Other Requirements: • Must be available to meet with donors, prospects, partner agencies, community and workplace partners, volunteers, and/or other stakeholders according to their schedule, occasionally in the early morning, evenings, and weekends
• Must be able to secure transportation to such meetings at various locations around the Head of the Lakes region
• Staff members who drive a vehicle on HLUW business must provide proof of a valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance
