Macalester College seeks a fundraising leader to raise funds for the college and lead a team of philanthropic giving officers. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators to raise funds that advance the mission of Macalester College. Together with the Director of Planned Giving, this position plays a critical role in the growth of individual giving at Macalester, especially during campaigns. The Philanthropic Giving team works with donors who have the inclination and capacity to make gifts of $50,000 to $5 million. Responsibilities:
This role is responsible for two critical functions: (1) Oversees the major gifts philanthropic giving pipeline, including managing a personal portfolio of donors, ensuring that prospects are managed effectively, and progress to goal is clear. This work is done in close collaboration with the Director of Planned Giving and the Director of the Macalester Fund; and (2) Manages all aspects of the Philanthropic Giving team, including setting team goals, supervising and coaching staff, and managing the budget. This fundraising leadership position reports to the AVP of Development, supervises a team of philanthropic giving officers, and supports the priorities identified by the college. 

Individual Fundraising Portfolio Management 40%
Oversee a regional and local portfolio raising philanthropic outright and planned gifts of $50,000 or more to advance the mission of Macalester College. Build and nurture relationships with donors ensuring the donor’s interests and passions are fulfilled by visiting, calling, e-mailing, serving as the primary contact, and educating donors regarding annual needs and transformative giving opportunities. 

Initiate contact with a portfolio of individual major gift donors and potential donors, develop appropriate cultivation strategies, complete successful solicitations, maintain stewardship contacts and strengthen relationships through a disciplined schedule of appointments and other meaningful activities. Leverage and collaborate with the Planned Giving team as needed to advance gift conversations. 

Work in partnership with the Macalester Fund team to secure and grow annual support from donors, and encourage and expect the rest of the Philanthropic Giving team to do the same. Serve as a team member in supporting key Macalester events, through planning consultation and attendance, which includes evening and weekend work. 

Understand Macalester’s programs, aspirations, and strategic priorities. Create, implement, and maintain a custom relationship plan for each qualified donor to assist in the creation of engagement offers and asks. Collaborate with the Donor Strategy team to strategically move donors to solicitation on a regular basis. Track and report relationship management activities.

Philanthropic Giving Team Supervision, Training, and Coaching 40%
Supervise a team of philanthropic giving officers responsible for the one-to-one gift fundraising activity. Train and coach team members and provide motivation and encouragement. Work collaboratively with team members to establish, evaluate progress, and meet metrics and individual goals. Assist gift officers with reaching their goals and increasing their effectiveness and success. Build a cohesive team, by creating a supportive and trust-based culture and a sense of belonging with each team member understanding their individual and collective impact. Position the team as a collaborative partner with the Macalester Fund and Planned Giving teams in helping to achieve shared goals. 

Team Leadership 10%
As a member of the Development leadership team, assist in establishing fundraising goals and development strategies to grow revenue from individual donors. Develop good working relationships with deans, department chairs, associate deans, volunteers, and administrative staff as it relates to donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. To this end, assist gift officers with department liaison roles and, along with the Director of Planned Giving and the Director of Foundation, Government, and Corporate Relations, serve as liaison to non-degree programs. These relationships require a high degree of skilled communication, careful planning, and exceptional execution. 

Diversity Equity and Inclusion 10%
Infuse DEI best practices including community-centric fundraising approaches in both the work and the culture of the team. Engage in and promote Macalester’s culture of diversity and inclusion, encompassing individuals of any heritage, identity, status, or orientation. Create a work environment that supports gift officers, including interactions in the field. Identify ways to facilitate healthy dialogue and responses to such situations within the organization.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years fundraising experience in major individual and planned giving or related field
  • Demonstrated successful fundraising experience, major gift solicitation/cultivation, and volunteer management, with proven track record of closing major gifts
  • Prior supervisory experience and a demonstrated ability to lead teams
  • Be customer service oriented - demonstrate the ability to respond with urgency to the needs and requests of others, internally and externally; ensure a high degree of responsiveness to all, including donors without regard to their giving level; understand the impact of their work on others
  • Successful experience in calling on donors, and developing cultivation, solicitation, and closing strategies
  • Ability to interact with high-level donors; be discreet and maintain a significant level of confidentiality
  • Ability to analyze information, plan, manage budgets, forecast revenue, and set goals
  • Possess exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Exceptional analytical, strategic, and tactical ability
  • Top candidates will be able to solve problems and develop individualized strategies that work for different donors
  • Demonstrated diplomacy and collaboration skills to work effectively with donors, college colleagues, and other volunteers
  • Proven ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in work with sensitive, confidential information and with other team members in the organization
  • A commitment to creating inclusive work environments that embrace diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view
  • Appreciation of and ability to advocate for the value of a liberal arts education.
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred; experience substitutes for preferred degree


Compensation:
The annual salary for this position is $115,000-$135,000, depending on experience.
