Overview: Community Emergency Service (CES) was founded in 1971 as an outreach ministry of Augustana Lutheran Church of Minneapolis–inspired by the vision of Pastor William Berg and the philanthropy of Russell Lund, Sr. of Lund’s Foods. For 53 years, CES has served our diverse neighbors across the Phillips neighborhood and adjacent areas of South, North, and Downtown Minneapolis with dignity and a sense of community to ensure everyone feels welcome.
Our mission is to transform lives by serving neighbors, sharing resources, and becoming community—a place where people come hungry and leave hopeful.
CES operates four main programs including critical ‘wrap around’ services (i.e. clothing, financial assistance, social support) to our clients to meet their hunger relief and practical needs.
Food shelf: Neighbors shop for nourishing and culturally familiar foods meeting the needs of 11,000 households annually.
Meals on Wheels: Healthy, prepared meals and vital socialization is provided to 530+ low-income and homebound seniors and adults with disabilities.
Home Delivery: Offers mobile food shelf deliveries to the homes of 350+ low-income, isolated seniors.
Ani-Meals: Ensuring our homebound seniors’ pets have access to food, veterinary care, and supplies.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the President, CES seeks a Director of Development and Marketing to provide strategic and day-to-day leadership to our development efforts and to be part of an organization that is making a difference in the lives of those most in need in the inner city.
The Director of Development and Marketing oversees all segments of our donor program including individuals, congregations, foundations, corporations, and other key stakeholder groups. They are responsible for developing our overall strategy and fundraising campaigns for each target group, communicating with current and prospective donors, and strategically building marketing and communication activities in support of our donor programs.
Position Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Fundraising and Development (60%)
- Leadership of overall fundraising program that consistently generates $2m+ in annual revenue.
- Function as primary relationship manager for various donor categories and other external stakeholders to ensure appropriate exposure and representation of CES.
- Establish appropriate donor solicitations (appeals, matching gift programs, etc.) to ensure the viability and sustainability of all funding.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and meaningful acknowledgement and reporting of donor impact.
- Generation of an annual engagement and communication calendar of development activities.
- Develop major donor strategy and cultivate these relationships with the President and Board.
- Oversee foundation grant program and identify and engage new grant prospects.
Strategy Development, Execution and Measurement (20%)
- Develop, evolve, and lead execution of the overall Development Strategy including the creation and implementation of short, intermediate, and long-term donor strategies.
- In collaboration with the President and Board of Directors, creation of overall budget as well as appropriate weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual activities to achieve revenue goals.
- Track and report on development activities, utilize external benchmarks and provide data analysis and reporting of the effectiveness and efficiency of fundraising programs.
- Prepare appropriate reports on development activities, progress, and effectiveness.
Marketing and Communications (10%)
- Strategic leadership of marketing and communications for the organization that aligns with our mission and the overall Development Strategy of CES.
- Collaborate with team on preparation of all fundraising appeals and related communications in connection with the overall development strategy and engagement and communication calendar.
Team Leadership (10%)
- Team leadership and development including mentoring/training, reviews, budgeting, and assignment of projects and responsibilities to team members.
Key Qualifications:
- Preferred qualifications for the Director of Development position will include the following (however not all qualifications must be possessed to be considered for the role):
- Demonstrated success in the field of major gifts cultivation and procurement.
- Proven experience leading and growing a comprehensive fundraising and development program of more than $1.5m + annually.
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and 7+ years of relevant development experience, including individual, foundation, major gifts, and legacy giving.
- Experience with key development technology platforms such as Bloomerang, or other donor management software.
- Advanced communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build relationships and tailor messages in a compelling way to a broad range of people with varying backgrounds, including strong presentation skills.
- Strong drive and ability to meet deadlines, work with minimal supervision and complete work in a timely and accurate manner.
- Experience training/mentoring junior staff.
- Creative problem-solving skills, excellent organization and planning skills, sound judgment and the ability to make decisions.
Compensation: The salary for this position is $80,000 – $100,000 annually, dependent on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes three weeks’ paid time off, holidays, retirement plan with employer matching contribution, 401(k) matching program and flexible/hybrid work scheduling. We offer a fully paid benefits program for this position.
