Position Summary: The National Lutheran Choir seeks a Director of Development who is an experienced and results-oriented professional to take responsibility for a diverse fundraising program including major gifts, special events, online campaigns, and direct mail appeals. From cultivating and stewarding relationships to creating budgets and analyzing data, the individual in this position manages multiple priorities and must have the ability to initiate and lead projects as well as strong attention to detail and follow-through. The National Lutheran Choir is staffed by a small, highly collaborative team. The person in this position will work closely with the Executive Director, Artistic Director, and others.
Responsibilities:
Planning & Leadership (20%)
- Work with Executive Director and Development Committee to create and implement annual and multiyear development plans.
- Leverage the growth of a new education program into fundraising prospects and charitable donations for the organization.
- Serve as primary staff to the Development Committee of the Board of Directors.
- Conduct and report on the ongoing analysis of fundraising results and the adjustment of tactics to improve outcomes.
- Develop and manage contributed revenue budgets.
Fundraising, Donor Acquisition, and Stewardship (50%)
- Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of current and prospective donors to the National Lutheran Choir developed in conjunction with the Executive Director.
- Serve as primary staff for the annual Gala, a 400-person event that generates approximately 20% of the National Lutheran Choir’s annual revenue.
- Work with churches and other affiliation groups to transform general interest into organized funding for an annual Chair to sponsor a singer.
- Develop tactics to convert online and in-person audience members to new donors.
- Implement an annual direct mail campaign that generates up to four mailings per year to retain and renew supporters.
- Plan and execute two annual online campaigns working with social media and video experts to engage prospects.
- Organize the annual Director’s Circle Event to acknowledge and celebrate our donors.
- Provide members of the Board of Directors with resources and data to communicate ongoing thanks and gratitude to donors.
- Continually improve and upgrade development programs to achieve the best possible results.
Development Program Administration (30%)
- Work with communications staff to incorporate appropriate development messages across organizational communication channels; coordinate fundraising campaigns with concert schedules and other organizational priorities.
- Oversee the development portion(s) of the NLCA.COM website ensuring content is fresh, appealing, and accurate.
- Develop and deploy special fundraising brochures, such as the Chair Campaign and annual Sponsorship brochure.
- Record gifts and generate thank you letters for donors on a weekly basis.
- Prepare and mail quarterly pledge reminders.
- Attend concerts and performances of the National Lutheran Choir and serve as a member of the concert-team to welcome patrons, interact with supporters, and present a professional concert presentation to the public.
Skills, Abilities and Qualifications
- 3-5 years of demonstrated fundraising success and knowledge of the principles of fundraising
- Familiarity with development software, databases, or other CRM systems
- Resourceful, self-starter who combines a high level of initiative with strong organizational skills.
- Strong capacity to manage multiple projects at once with attention to detail and follow-through.
- Professional, engaging, and diplomatic demeanor; strong people skills.
- Excellent writing, research, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Attendance at local concerts is required; travel with the Choir when on tour may be required.
