Salary Range: $95,000 - $108,000
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Managing Director of Mission Advancement is a visionary leader who ensures The Basilica of St Mary (BSM), and The Basilica Landmark (TBL) have adequate resources to fulfill their missions including high community and donor engagement, a culture of stewardship, philanthropy and volunteerism, and adequate annual financial resources and long-term gifts to sustainably operate.
SCOPE OF POSITION
In partnership with the Pastor/Rector, Trustees, Lay Leaders and Board of Directors, the MD of Mission Advancement establishes plans and goals to meet the organizations needs. With the Mission Advancement Team (at present, ~12 employees) the MD of Mission Advancement delivers on these goals as a positive leader, manager and strategist. Within the community, the MD of Mission Advancement expands visibility and connection to the mission and philanthropic case with energy, collaboration and professionalism. As a member of the Managing Director team, the MD of Mission Advancement advances the mission for employees, volunteers and donors through excellence in leadership and transparent communications.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree required
5+ years of Management experience required
Demonstrated success in leadership and strategy for development function
A minimum of 7 years of development experience, including:
Portfolio management and growth
Experience in non-profit, religious institutions and/or Catholic Church
Demonstrated ability to solicit and close major ($50,000+) gifts
Mastery of relevant technologies for fundraising such as Raiser’s Edge, or similar
Best practice knowledge of fundraising goals and metrics
Physical Demands

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR ACTIVITES
Planning, goals and fundraising strategy across all funds for BSM/TLB (25%)
Develop and execute long range and annual plans to expand engagement, volunteerism, culture of philanthropy and annual and major giving
Develop a deep working knowledge of BSM/TBL, including its mission, vision and strategic needs. Understand and support its vision, aspirations, and fundraising priorities; define and articulate a compelling and unique case for support of the BSM/TBL giving that positions it for fundraising success.
Collaborate with the Pastor/Rector, TLB, Managing Directors, Trustees and Development team members to develop and implement an overall strategic plan for the solicitation of major gifts and annual giving to meet BSM and TLB goals.
Work closely with Pastor/Rector, lay leadership and Staff to identify priorities and opportunities for new major gifts within BSM, TBL and Community. Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of philanthropic priorities to effectively and convincingly share them with prospects and donors.
Develop an annual Mission Advancement work plan, including specific fundraising, prospect development and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics for the position. Ensure that annual production aligns with organizations’ goals.
Report on and be accountable for annual goal attainment for fundraising, engagement and philanthropic giving; modify and adjust plans as needed to attain department and organizational goals
Engagement, development relationships and portfolio leadership (25%)
Lead the Mission Advancement function to expand engagement, volunteerism, culture of philanthropy and annual and major giving through coordinated workstreams and actions
With MA Team, develop a solicitation plan that fosters multiple points of coordinated, strategic contact for each prospect based on research data and information gathered through qualification visits; serve as a resource and partner to governance and advisory groups, Board of Directors, and campaign committees.
Collaborate with individual gift officers and other leaders who have prospects with interest in BSM/TLB.
Work with Pastor/Rector, lay leadership and Staff to identify new prospects, manage and advance prospect relationships, and develop effective solicitation strategies.
Work with Gift Officers to optimize portfolio; use best practices in relationship management to advance prospect relationships toward gifts; develop strategies to generate increased levels of giving for BSM/TBL
Engage the Pastor/Rector in relationship management and cultivation and solicitation of prospects as appropriate. - - - Coordinate and facilitate the Pastor/Rectors’ fundraising efforts to ensure good communication, partnership and follow-through with the prospective donor.
Manage a portfolio of highly qualified major and principal gift-level prospects associated with BSM/TBL; facilitate active relationships for assigned prospects while endeavoring to match funding needs with prospects’ interests.
Identify, cultivate and qualify prospects; solicit and close major and principal gifts ($50,000+) sufficient to meet or exceed individual and team gift goals set annually as well as capital campaign goals
Team leadership and management (25%)
Provide visionary leadership for the Mission Advancement function including Development, Engagement, Stewardship, Events, Communications and Administrative support teams (currently ~12 team members) to develop team and individual talent and capabilities
Supervise development department, including Gift Officers, Stewardship staff, Operations and Administrative staff, including establishing performance metrics, overseeing the development of their annual work plans, working with Prospect Management and Research on the composition of their portfolios (for front-line fundraisers) and integrating their work into the overall strategy for the unit.
Supervise Engagement, Communications and Stewardship teams including establishing performance metrics, overseeing the development of their annual work plans to expand the culture of philanthropy and volunteerism
Supervise Operations and Administrative workstreams to ensure high quality delivery of appeals, campaigns, reporting, events and all other functions of the Mission Advancement department
Clearly outline specific duties and expectations for direct reports, lead with a positive culture and high standard of quality
Technology, reporting & data management for MA (15%)
Lead the evolution of the technology, reporting and data capabilities of the Mission Advancement team to align to best practices and standards of effectiveness, including but not limited to:
Manage technology and vendor selection, training, process adherence and data quality for fundraising platforms to achieve continuous improvement of accurate, timely data for Mission Advancement
Advance the technology stack to contemporize tools including digital and online giving, communications and marketing tools and
Complete and file timely reports of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing our donor database; maintain accurate and relevant records within the database.
Prepare strategy documents and communications that articulate the engagement plan, progress to goals and donor engagement in a data-driven way
Work with the team to ensure proper documentation of all prospect visits and/or meaningful interactions with donors to achieve coordinated communication with all stakeholders in the relationship-building process.
BSM and TBL Leadership (10%)
Fulfill and advance the effectiveness of organizational leadership needs of BSM as Managing Director
Serve as a member of the Managing Directors team (3 in total) supporting executive decisions, organizational needs and advisor to Pastor/Rector on key decisions for BSM or TLB
Lead, periodic Director's meetings for organizational alignment in collaboration with the other Managing Directors and Pastor/rector
Maintain strong working relationships and alignment with the finance team (for audit, gift recording, taxes, etc.) and liturgy & learning teams (for mission, pastoral needs, events and liturgical collaboration)
Attend Board and Council meetings or serve as liaison for Mission Advancement, as requested
Provide reports, data, leadership and presentations to BSM Staff, TLB, Parish and Finance Councils as requested
Serve as mentor and role model for staff and lay leaders to develop talent
Fulfill other leadership team needs as required
Other Requirements:
This role is based in Minneapolis, and offices from the - - BSM campus, some remote work possible
Evening and weekend work hours often required
Periodic travel required
Exempt: Be ready to work and complete all assigned responsibilities and accept additional responsibilities identified (as needed) by your supervisor.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $95,000- $108,000 annually. Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment.
