Job SummaryPPL is looking for a development professional to take an established fundraising program in an innovative and expanded direction. Building off a strong base of support, the Director of Development oversees the operations of a robust fundraising team that is responsible for raising approximately $5 million annually from private sources. The position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing PPL’s fundraising operations to include institutional giving, individual giving, direct mail, major gifts, and special events. The successful candidate will bring a results-driven style, personal accountability, and skills to identify and implement creative approaches to a strong development team. The Director of Development is part of PPL’s Development and External Affairs team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, and create a donor-centered organization that nurtures loyalty through a comprehensive relationship-building program including cultivation and communications.
- Develop and oversee a robust annual fundraising program to include grants, direct mail, annual fundraising drives, and special events; additionally, direct the annual employee giving campaign.
- Oversee institutional giving, including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.
- Identify prospective individual and institutional donors and develop strategies to cultivate those relationships.
- Grow a formal major gifts program, including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors.
- Assist President/CEO and Vice President of Development & External Relations in developing the strategy and call assignments for their individual portfolios.
- Maintain stewardship contacts with donors: adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition and perseverance, reflect an optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to the needs of donors.
- Work with program areas and communications to understand and advance the case for private sector support overall, and specific funding priorities.
- Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
- Make solicitations when appropriate; and/or involve the CEO and Vice President of Development & External Affairs, and other senior leaders and colleagues as appropriate.
- Create monthly reports that accurately reflect activity and performance against stated metrics.
- Build a planned giving program with a focus on estate gifts.
- Oversee prospect research.
- Manage relationships with prospective donors in all aspects of the development cycle:
- Initiate contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors across multiple segments.
- Develop and implement appropriate cultivation strategies.
- Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
- Secure 5-10 meaningful face-to-face visits per month.
- Make solicitations when appropriate; and/or involve the CEO and Vice President of Development & External Affairs, and other senior leaders and colleagues as appropriate.
- Maintain stewardship contacts with donors: adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition and perseverance, reflect an optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to the needs of donors.
- Staff the Board Committee for Development & Communications (5x/year).
- Oversee fundraising database and tracking systems.
- Oversee the creation of support materials for fundraising activities.
- Maintain gift recognition programs.
- Work with program areas and communications to understand and advance the case for private sector support overall, and specific funding priorities.
- Create monthly reports that accurately reflect activity and performance against stated metrics.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises Grants Manager, Manager of Annual Fund & Special Events, Development Associate, and Financial & Database Analyst (3.5 FTE). May direct the work of interns and volunteers as needed.
Qualifications and Credentials
- Strong knowledge, understanding, and experience engaging and participating in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) efforts at an organization.
- Ability to build strong relationships with organizational peers and management; maintaining a positive and constructive attitude while solving problems.
- Ability to manage people, processes, deadlines, and budgets while adhering to the policies and procedures of the organization.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Windows, PowerPoint, Excel, and Raiser’s Edge (Blackbaud), or a comparable constituent relationship database platform.
- The individual will have the maturity and self-confidence to recognize and respect the inherent strengths of PPL and, at the same time, add a fresh perspective and “out of the box” thinking.
- Proven planning and organizational skills.
Educational & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education or experience; baseline certification in fundraising, CFRE preferred.
- 10 years minimum experience in the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices; standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, direct mail, and development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting.
- An understanding of the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and the organization.
- Successful experience in making initial introductory calls and visits in support of evolving the portfolio to incorporate greater numbers of cultivation and solicitation strategies.
- Strong interest and passion for PPL’s mission to build the hope, assets, and self-reliance of individuals and families who have lower incomes by providing transformative affordable housing and employment readiness services.
- Must be willing to meet in offices and homes of assigned prospects and donors across the greater Twin Cities area.
- Direct solicitation experience is essential.
- Must have excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
